Abstract expressionism in ceramic art and Peter Voulkos

The concept of modern, which was effective in social life with the Industrial Revolution that emerged in England, started the formation process of modernism by showing itself in the field of art. Modernism; Abstract art movements began to emerge in this process, in which the traditional perception of art changed. Abstract Expressionism, one of these movements; Although it removed the political, aesthetic and moral boundaries, it was primarily effective in the field of painting. Abstract Expressionism, which allows elements such as figures, spaces and objects to move away from the canvas surface, has changed the traditional perception of painting. The aim of this study is to reveal the reflections of this change in perception on ceramic art. Ceramic, which has a long and deep-rooted history, has come to the fore with its traditional side. Influenced by the Abstract Expressionism movement, it created a field of expression beyond the traditional production understanding and technical boundaries. American ceramic artist Peter Voulkos, who is the most important representative of this movement in ceramic art; While the early works he produced using a ceramic shaping lathe preserve their connection with the symmetry of the lathe, it is seen that in his recent works, he has produced contemporary works beyond the boundaries of tradition, function and technique such as tearing, tearing, adding or removing parts, deforming. Artist; In this study, it has been tried to be discussed in the direction of the situation, processes, educator side, perspective and approaches to art and ceramics. This work, which deals with Peter Voulkos, who has an important place and value with his artist identity and the students he trained, in bringing the contemporary art dimension of ceramics to the fore; It is aimed to be a source for researches to be made in the field of cntemporary ceramic art.
