The effect of sensory integration therapy on balance and cognitive skills of individuals with cerebral palsy

The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of sensory integration therapy on balance, functional independence level, functional mobility, sensory processing skills and cognitive function variables among cerebral palsy.The study included 22 children with cerebral palsy who continue rehabilitation center.The study group (2F&9M; 7.3 ± 1.7 years) and the control group (4F&7M; 8.3 ± 1.4 years) were randomized into two groups. The sosciodemographic features of participants were recorded by using a structured questionnaire. Balance of the participant were measured by pediatric berg balance scale and functional mobility and agility were measured by timed up and go test.The functional independence level of the patients in daily life was evaluated by WeeFIM. Sensory Profile was used to evaluate sensory processing skills. DOTCA-Ch was used to evaluate cognitive skills. Balance and coordination exercises (1 day/week 45 min) were applied to both groups while individualized sensory integration therapy (1 day/week 45 min) was applied to study group for twelve weeks .At the end of the study we found that all measures were improved in both groups.When the groups were compared, there were no difference statistically (p˃0,05) but sensory integration group was better clinically in Berg balance test and timed up and go test . There was significant difference (p˂0,05) in WeeFIM, DOTCA-Ch and Sensory Profile (sensory input search, emotional response, inattention, sensory sensitivity scores and perceptual fine motor) between two groups. Consistent with hypothesis, We found that sensory integration therapy and balance coordination exercises contributes to balance, functional mobility, functional independence level, sensory processing capabilities and cognitive function levels in patients with cerebral palsy.
