Doç.Dr. Abdullah ŞENGÜLIn this study , the life, works and literary personality of Serhat Kestel, one of thewomen writers of Republic Period, have been tried to be clarified. With this aim, thewriter?s novels and stories have been analyzied in detail and the works which aresimilar to documentary and journey writing have been introduced.Serhat Kestel tries to find an answer to the question of where the place ofwomen is in the society through mentioning the effect of social realism on theindividuals and families in her works. The writer deals with the repression of womenwithin the women-men relations from a wide perspective considering the social andpolitical conditions of the time and she uses the works of her own as a tool for this aim .The most interesting aspect of Serhat Kestel is that in her works she tells theproblems women facing in the struggle for standing as a valuable individual in societyin a way that is far from the feminist approach. She presents the place of the womanusing ?civilized woman? model with the framework of women?s legal and social rightsthey gained after Republic as well as mentioning the sexual problems of women andmen with a great courage. At this point, she follows a different way from the otherwriters?.From her point of view, art should be a mirror reflecting the realities of thesociety.Serhat KESTEL proves that she is a good user of Turkish Language in her worksin which she uses plain and understandable language.
