The effects of serum androgen levels on gleason score in prostate cancer

Key words: prostate cancer, testosterone, Gleason scoreOBJECTİVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of serum androgen levels on Gleason score in prostate cancer.MATERIAL AND METHOD : The study group consisted of subjected to transrectal biopsy and diagnosed as prostate cancer in GUTF Department of Urology, correlations between 2006-2007 serum levels hormones such as FSH, LH, E2, fTest, tTest, fPSA density, E2/tTest and Gleason score were investigated. Also, the analysis was repeated after classification of patient according to testosterone levels as low(8,6pg/ml<), normal and high.RESULTS: 50 patients were included in our study. The median age of patients was 63± 6,6 , PSA levels were 9,5ng/dl± 7,1 and the median Gleason score was 5,6± 1,3. While E2/tTest ratios were statictically negative correlated with Gleason score; PSA and PSA density were positively correlated with Gleason score. Moreover among the three groups which are classified according to tTest levels, low tTest levels were found to be negatively correlated with Gleason score.CONCLUSION : Our study revealed that low testosterone levels were assosicated with high grade prostate cancer. The increase of E2/tTest was associated with a decrease in Gleason score and we concluded that this could be a possible progress of differentiation to good tumor patern.
