Mahmud Zokaydî’s views on tajwīd in the context of his work titled ‘Şerh Alā Diyâi Basîreti Kalbi’l-arûf Fi’t-tajwīd Wa’r-resm Wa Farşi’ıl- hurûf’

Sheikh Mahmud Zokaydî was born in 1877 in the village of Halenze in Siird and important figures who educated in the Zokayd madrasah. Zokayd is a center of knowledge and wisdom that has made significant contributions to Turkey's religious life. The education, authorship, and guidance activities in the Zokayd lodge and madrasa have undoubtedly been influenced by Sheikh Mahmud Zokaydi. One of Zokayd's distinguishing features compared to other neighboring centers of learning is its focus on tajweed. At this center, tajweed is not only taught as a practical science but also addressed in written works. The tradition of writing on this subject began with grand father Molla Halil al-Si‘irdî and was carried on by subsequent generations. In this regard, Sheikh Mahmud Zokaydi both incorporated his grandfather Si‘irdî’s works on tajweed into his teaching activities and authored two treatises in which he revised and simplified his grandfather's commentary. In the treatise that is the subject of our study, Zokaydi, like his grandfather Si‘irdî, accepts Hafs as the authoritative imam in tajweed and bases his discussions on this perspective. The topics covered in the treatise include the definition and ruling of tajweed, the articulation points and characteristics of letters, the states of tarqiq (softening) and tafkheem (emphasis), idgham (assimilation), the conditions of tanween and the silent nun, ghunnah (nasal sound), imala (inclination), elongations (mad), the ruling of the pronoun ha’, and the principles of pausing (waqf) and starting (ibtida).
