Black glazed greyware pottery from Seyitömer mound

ABSTRACT BLACK GLAZED GREYWARE POTTERY FROM SEYİTÖMER MOUND USTA, Hüseyin Master's Thesis, Department of Archaeology Thesis Advisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökhan COŞKUN July, 2014, 174 pages This study investigates the black glazed greyware pottery unearthed from the Achaemenid and Hellenistic Period layers at Seyitömer Mound. The forms of the discovered items were determined and they were typologically classified into a catalogue. The potteries were evaluated in view of the layer they were discovered and they were comparatively studied and dated regarding their parallels in various other centres. As a result of the research it was determined that the pottery discovered from the Achaemenid Period layers dated to 5th and 4th centuries B.C. while the pottery discovered from the Hellenistic period layers were used between 4th and 2nd centuries B.C. The most intense use was observed during 4th century B.C. As a result of our study; it would be convenient to assert that the Seyitömer Mound samples were imitations of Attic pottery. Moreover, the black glazed Attic potteries discovered at the site were probable models for the mentioned greyware pottery. As already known greyware pottery had been the favourite form used about the Phrygian region. It is possible to encounter parallels of the studied pottery in terms of profile, paste texture and surface ornamentation in the centres located in the close vicinity. It is possible to assert that the black glazed greyware potteries discovered at Seyitömer Mound were locally produced. However, there is currently no substantiation suggesting they were produced at Seyitömer Mound. However, considering the abundant number of finds and other features it was deduced that these potteries were produced either at Seyitömer Mound or its close vicinity.
