THE GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF CLAYS IN THE BASIN OF SEYİTÖMER (KÜTAHYA) AND THEIR POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS IN THE CERAMIC INDUSTRY Gürsel Yanık Mining Engineering, M.S. Thesis, 1997 Thesis Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. İskender IŞIK SUMMARY Upper Cretaseous aged serpentine formed principally from lizardite is occupied first place as basement unit within Seyitömer Lignite Mining Area. The basement unit is underlied unconformably by Late Miocene aged Seyitömer Formation containing two different coal levels associated with clayey units such as mudstone. The studied area is located in the extensional environment of West Anatolia. Clayey units are generally gray and beige in the field; however, they are black and green down to the bottom. Clay-size mineral is determined as 17 to 33% referring to the result of particle size analysis of seven clayey samples. On the basis of XRD and SEM, the most common clay minerals are illite {Ky (Al, Mg, FeHAL-Si^OioCOH^ yKeyword: Jeomorfoloji = Geomorphology ; Kil = Clay ; Kütahya-Seyitömer = Kütahya-Seyitömer ; Mineraloji = Mineralogy
