Evaluation of new bone formation in maxillary sinus floor augmented by bovine bone grafts in combination with platelet rich plasma: Histological and histomorphometrical study

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to evaluate the new bone formation in maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) procedures augmented by bovine derived Unilab Surgibone® (BBG) in combination with platelet rich plasma (PRP) by histological and histomorphometrical examinations and to evaluate the stability of the implants placed in these regions. Ten patients (7 male, 3 female) with 20 bilateral phnomateuzed maxillary sinuses with a mean age of 53,78±7,06 (between 45 and 67) was participated in the study. One side of the patients were augmented with the BBG and formed the control group while other sides were augmented with BBG in combination with PRP formed the study group. Residual bone height was measured in panoramic radiographs. The complications during the study were recorded. Resonance frequency analyses were measured at the 6,8±0,95 months after the MSFA and 6,52±071 months after the placement of implants. Twenty-eight implants were placed to the patients (14 at the control group and 14 at the study group). Histological examinations showed new bone formation and the resorption of the BBG particles in all of the specimens. Histomorphometrical examinations showed 59,97±7,53% and 57,86±4,41% soft tissue, residual graft volume 21,98±6,66% ve 23,68±5,99%, new bone formation 15,84±4,8% ve 16,05±3,86% and trabecular bone volume 64,7±22,53% ve 69,11±18,66% in control and study groups respectively. There isn?t any statistically significant difference was found between the groups for histomorphometrical findings (p>0,05). The ISQ values at the 1. and 2. controls were 71,78±4,96, 70,36±5,77 and 75,43±6,40 and 74,44±6,46 for control and study groups respectively. The implant stability quotient (ISQ) values for 2. controls for both groups were found statistically higher than the 1. controls for both groups. The results of this study showed that Unilab Surgibone® bone graft is a succesfull grafting material for MSFA procedures when used alone. The use of PRP in combination with BBG doesn?t have any effect on bone formation and the stability of implants. At least 6 months period is enough after the MSFA for implant placement and for loading of the implants after implant placement.
