The effect of helical grooved grinding wheel on surface roughness in cylindrical grinding

Abstract (EN)

In manufacturing industry, surface roughness on the required level and minimum cost are very important. Since grinding process is regarded as the last process in manufacturing industry, measurement accuracy of working item has a great importance. Optimum selection of parameters is needed in order to call the grinding process as the last process or to pass to the later processes in a healthy way. In this study, four different materials are subjected to cylindrical grinding process via flat surfaced grinding wheel and helical grooved grinding wheel. Grinding wheel parameters are determined by evaluating the connections between ?Average Roughness? (Ra), ?Average Ten Points Height? (Rz) and ?Square root of Aggregate of Squares of Averages? (Rq) values. Among these, all of the parameters, except for grinding wheel geometry, were held fixed. Flat surfaced grinding and helical grooved grinding were used. With both of the grindings, cylindrical grinding wheel processes were conducted. Results were evaluated by the help of data which had been taken from surface roughness measuring apparatus. As the result of experiment it was determined that surface quality increases by using grinding which has helical grooves in proportion to flat surfaced grinding. Therefore, one of the most important parameters affecting the quality of surface roughness is helical grooved grinding wheel.
