Cinefili's taste preferences: A Bourdieucian approach

Cinephilia, which is synonymous with cinematography, does not mean an ordinary movie consumption act, they are the only representatives of a passionate production branch that includes certain rituals. Cinephiles, who establish a sincere connection with the films with the vision of life in which the cinema is the main axis, have built their own unique taste practices and viewing experiences with the enthusiasm they receive from the cinema. From this point of view, this study, which considers cinephilia as a notion, investigates what kind of taste practices cinephile subjects have and how their film preferences are sociologically positioned. In the first place, the historical development of cinephilia, the classification of cinephiles on the basis of concepts, the habits, tendencies and areas of association of cinephiles were investigated. In the second part, based on Pierre Bourdieu's concepts and discussions, it is examined how tastes create distinctions through films. In this study, pioneered by Bourdieu's theory of taste, the Third and Fourth chapters are devoted to in-depth interviews with twelve cinephiles within the scope of field research. In this study, in which case study was used, it was seen that the film tastes of the participants had a very broad perspective and had a multidimensional structure that extended to various fields and genres. At this point, it has been determined that movie tastes are in a heterogeneous structure. However, it has been observed that the new and classical distinctions of cinephilia, which is described according to the way it relates to cinema, become obscure and replace each other.
