Abstract (EN)

Toponymy is the branch of science that studies place names in various ways. This discipline, which is a sub-branch of science, is one of the richest branches of science (onomastic) in terms of vocabulary. The names of the places created by people's imagination can contain a lot of information about the physical features of the place, and they carry a lot of information from the social life to the spirituality of the people living there. In this respect, science requires an interdisciplinary approach. In this study, which was carried out in order to contribute to science and especially its sub-branch, geography, the place names of 33 villages of Sinop-Türkeli district were collected by interview method and the obtained data were classified in terms of origin, meaning and structure. Looking at the general framework of place names, despite the fact that borrowed words are also used as place names, the number of Turkish place names is noteworthy. It is also possible to see the influence of various communities living in the region on the naming of places in the historical process.
