Abstract (EN)

EFFECT OF SINTERING TEMPERATURE ON PROPERTIES OF QUARTZr^ZEOLITE MİX Serkan ABALI Ceramic Engineering, M.S.Thesis, 2002 Thesis Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Osman ŞAN SUMMARY This study examines the effects of sintering temperature (between 1000°-1200°C) on the phase composition, specific density and specific surface area of quartz-zeolite mix powder. High-purity quartz (99.09% Si02) and clinoptilolite type zeolite (%25 zeolite, by weight) was mixed and ground a by ball milling in aqueous system for 80 hrs, then, the powder-sample was sintered in an air for 7 hrs. Phase transformation of quartz to cristobahte first appeared at around the sintering temperature of 1000°C and the transformation of quartz to cristobalite was observed as the sintering temperature increased: the cristobalite first appeared at around the sintering temperature of 1000°C and the transformation of quartz the cristobalite was much more significant at the sintering temperature of 1200°C. The obtained high-cristobalite-Si02 powder has a low specific density and low specific surface area, such that 2.27 g/cm3 and 0.44 m2/g, respectively. The high-cristobalite powder-sample was used for producing of a microporous ceramic filter. The product was investigated with respect to structural properties such as porosity, pore size distrubution and bend strength. Keywords: Powder, Sintering, Quartz, Zeolite, e**3^
