Relationship between suicide attempt and pozitive and negative symptoms, depression, hopelessness, insight and cognitive functions in patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract (EN)
Rates of suicide attempts and completed suicide in patients with schizophrenia about 15 to 20 times higher than the general population. Attempted suicide rates in schizophrenia has been reported as approximately %20 to %40. However, the rate of completed suicide schizophrenia, about %5 to %10. History of suicide, depression, hopelessness, insight and beter cognitive functions are the factors that increase the risk of suicide in patients with schizophrenia. Cognitive impairment seen in patients with schizophrenia is one of the most sign of the disease. In this study, suicide attempts, symptoms, insight, hopelessness, depression, and cognitive functions was investigated in 50 schizophrenic patients who applied to Gazi University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. Patients included in the study was assessed with The demographic and clinical data collection form, negative symptoms rating scale (SANS), Scale for Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, Three Components of Insight Rating Scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale, Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation, Stroop test and Wisconsin Card Sorting test.When suicide attempters (n=19) and non attempters (n=31) are compared Beck Hopelessness Scale (p=0.005), Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (p=0.001), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (p=0.004) scores, WCST total true number (p=0.005) are significantly higher in the suicide attempters. WCST perseverative response (p=0.04), perseverative mistake (p=0.031) and perseverative mistake percentage (p=0.006) are significantly beter in suicide attempters.
