Abstract (EN)
In this thesis, the usability of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a fuel store in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) was investigated. NaBH4 is widely used in fuel cell technologies due to its hydrogen storage capacity and ease of transport. The aim of the study is to determine the usability of NaBH4 as an alternative fuel for UAVs. Within the scope of the study, basic properties of NaBH4 such as synthesis mechanism, chemical properties, performance in fuel cells and energy density were investigated. The study also evaluated important factors for practical use, such as the storage, transport and refilling of NaBH4. In the evaluations, hydrogen gas can potentially be used as a fuel for UAVs since hydrogen gas is a cleaner energy source compared to other conventional fuels, and also longer flight times and wider range for UAVs due to hydrogen's high energy density. It has been concluded that it can provide ranges. However, since NaBH4 is reactive in its pure form and can decompose rapidly when in contact with air, it has been evaluated that appropriate storage and transportation precautions should be taken. The results show that NaBH4 is easy to refill and can be stored safely, and also that NaBH4 is a potential fuel for UAVs. NaBH4 has a high hydrogen storage capacity, which can enable UAVs to fly for long periods of time. However, there are some difficulties in terms of practical application. Therefore, more research and development studies on the subject are required. It is thought that the development of storage and transportation methods and increasing the energy density of NaBH4 will be important steps to fully reveal its potential.
