The place of sustai̇nable development in social studiestextbooks

Social studies is a course that is considered important to raise awareness and sensitivity in students about leaving a natural, cultural and economically livable world to future generations. Social studies also has an effective place in providing students with content related to the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development. This research aims to examine inclusion of content regarding the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development in the 5th, 6th and 7th grade social studies textbooks which were prepared by the Ministry of National Education. The 5th, 6th and 7th textbooks prepared by the Ministry of National Education were used as documents in the research in which the comprehensive analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods, was adopted. In research, a data collection form covering themes related to the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development, which was created in line with the literature review, was used. The research data were analyzed using the descriptive analysis method. As a result of the research, it was concluded that content on the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development was included in each of the 5th, 6th and 7th grade textbooks. It was concluded that the content on the environmental dimension of sustainable development was contained mostly int the 5th grade textbook, the content on the economic dimension was included mostly in the 7th grade textbook and the content on the social dimension was include mostly in the 6th grade textbook. In line with this research, it can be suggested to develop practical research in providing content regarding the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development and in creating awareness and consciousness.
