Abstract (EN)
This study aims to examine the role of social studies course in shaping the citizenship perceptions of Syrian refugee students under temporary protection in Turkiye. Social studies course is considered as the cornerstone of citizenship education and aims to provide individuals with concepts such as active participation in social life, awareness of rights and responsibilities, democratic values and social justice. In this context, the study examined how the social studies course affected Syrian students, especially those in disadvantaged groups. The research was conducted using a qualitative research method, specifically the phenomenological design. Phenomenology focuses on phenomena that we are aware of but do not fully understand. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview form administered to participants and analyzed using content analysis. The study group consisted of 40 Syrian refugee students. The findings reveal that Syrian students perceive the Social Studies course as an important tool for adapting to society, recognizing their rights, and becoming effective citizens. It was found that the course helped students gain awareness of societal functioning, the structure of the state, and individual rights and responsibilities; it also helped them feel more integrated into society and develop hope regarding future citizenship processes. The results of the research show that the social studies course has assumed an inclusive and transformative function not only for Turkish citizen students but also for asylum-seeking and migrant students. In this respect, social studies education should be considered a tool for promoting social integration.
