Raising awareness on gender inequality issues in social studies : Examples of violence against women and gender discrimination

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to develop material samples that students will be able to examine and analyze gender discrimination and violence against women in content of ''SB 6.6.6'' learning outcome of social studies (Students will be able to realize the value given to women in social life based on Turkish history and current examples). For this aim, news of violence against women which created in a masculine language in the media, important women who have faced gender discrimination in history such as Samiye Cahit Morkaya, Safiye Ali, Sabiha Ziya Bengütaş; women's act, statistics, practices in violence against women, are added as contents of materials. The contents are organized in accordance with the student level by being associated with social studies in line with the objectives. Document review from qualitative research methods is used in the study. The materials are described in a descriptive manner within the scope of the specified themes and objectives. Expert opinions have been consulted to ensure reliability and validity of this study. As a result; within the scope of social studies course, it has been determined that it is possible to develop material samples that will contribute to the formation of gender equality.
