The use of local historical space Göbeklitepe in cultural heritage education in social studies lessons

Cultural heritage education; It makes significant contributions to increasing curiosity about cultural elements that bear the traces of the past and to the development of national identity and active citizenship. In this context, the study aimed to determine the educational results of the use of Göbeklitepe, a historical and cultural place, in cultural heritage education of students in the 5th grade Social Studies course. Case study, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The study group of the research consisted of 22 fifth grade students at a public secondary school in Şanlıurfa. The study group was determined by easily accessible case sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods. Data collection tools of the research; The Talking Tablets Activity consists of the Talking Tablets Worksheet, Student Diaries, Göbeklitepe Newspaper, Metaphor Study and Self-Assessment Form. Content analysis and descriptive statistical analysis were used to analyze the data. The results obtained in the research revealed that cultural heritage education activities created students' awareness of the historical artifacts of Göbeklitepe, learned the historical process of Göbeklitepe and were able to associate this with the history of Şanlıurfa. It has been determined that students understand that it is not possible to know everything about Göbeklitepe in accordance with the nature of history. In their diaries, students claimed that research, excavations and oral history should be used to solve the mystery of the history of Göbeklitepe. However, it was determined that students had difficulty in perceiving change and continuity and in applying high-level thinking skills.
