Social studies pre-service teachers' self-efficacy and achievement levels on map reading

In this study, it is intended to determine the level of self-efficacy and success of social studies teacher candidates on map reading.In the research, a test including 20 items developed by the researcher and 5Likert-type scale of self-efficacy and achievement test consisting of 20 questions were used. The students, studying in the department of Social Studies Teaching in Faculty of Education in 2014-2015 academic year from Aksaray, Cumhuriyet, Erciyes, Necmettin Erbakan and Nigde Universities, constitute the workgroup. A total of 420 students from grade 3 and 4 participated in the study. SPSS 22.0 programme was used to analyze the data of the study. In the data analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test and Pearson correlation analysis were performed in order to examine the relationship between variables and reading map self-efficacy and achievment, the variables' in the scale (gender, age, education deemed university, grade level and course-related condition in GIS) frequency distributions, descriptive statistics, normal distribution case of the scale. As a result, it is found that Social studies teacher candidates' map reading self-efficacy level is high in terms of the ability of location interpretation; however, it is low in terms of the ability of location identification. It is also found that the ability of location interpretation in map knowledge success level is high; however, it is low in the ability of map process. Furthermore, a low positive relation is found between map reading self-efficacy and map knowledge success level.
