Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, which deals with the importance of geometric elements in abstract painting art, all its phases from primitive ages to the present are touched upon, and its occurrence in Western and Turkish art is mentioned. The branch of painting, which is a branch that contains the earliest examples of art, emerged by embroidering objects and creatures around the ancient times on cave walls with simple geometric shapes. With the rise of realism and one-to-one painting over time, the use of geometric elements has decreased; at the beginning of the 20th century, it has started to be preferred again in the field of abstract painting, which is a new movement where subjective and intellectual works are presented. Geometric abstract art, also known as non figurative art, entered the history of Turkish art at the same ages with Europe. Along with the development of abstract painting in the West and the use of geometric elements, examples from many foreign artists were given and the period from the first abstract works in the history of Turkish painting to the present was evaluated, and examples of the works of Turkish abstract painting artists and Turkish geometric abstract painting artists were examined. With the basis of that the usage of geometric elements played a role at the center of both occurence of painting and the emerge of abstract art which is beginned thousands of years later, Refiye Güneş, touched on geometric form and pure color in her works.
