Evaluation of postgraduate thesis on vocabulary and vocabulary teaching (Secondary school level)

The aim of this study is to examine post-graduate thesis for secondary school on vocabulary and vocabulary teaching in Turkish education and to reveal their contribution to the field. The data source of the study constitute post-graduate thesis for secondary school, which were written between 1981-2018 and can be accessed from the National Thesis Center database of the Higher Education Council. The data obtained by the scanning method are examined by the document analysis method. In this study post-graduate thesis about vocabulary; have been examined according to programs, years, according to institutes, subjects, according to sampling/study group, according to methods, according to results and suggestions. As a result of the study, it is concluded that postgraduate thesis related to vocabulary and vocabulary teaching are more concentrated in higher education, further studies have been conducted at the Institute of Social Sciences, the most studied topics are the determination of the written vocabulary of the students and the vocabulary of the textbooks, as well as the 5th grade and textbooks are selected most as the sampling/study group. In addition, as a result of the study it was observed that scanning model was used in theses mostly, as data analysis, document analysis was performed and composition was used as a data collection tool mostly. Theses were also examined according to their results and suggestions, and it was understood that the results were concentrated in determining the vocabulary in textbooks and student written expressions. In the theses examined, it is often suggested to increase the quality of course materials to improve vocabulary and to make activities aimed at improving reading habit.
