Investigation of sports achievements relationship with the school academic achievement of middle school students attending sports activities

With this research; It is aimed to investigate whether the participation of middle school students in amateur sports teams and their participation in sports activities affect their academic success or not. This research was conducted according to the relational screening model. Approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Batman University during the research process. Research sample; In the 2017-2018 academic year, it covers licensed athletes who have completed 5,6,7 or 8th grade in Batman city center secondary schools and regularly participate in active training in amateur sports clubs for at least one year. The participants consisted of 139 people, 70 (50.4%) of which were female athletes and 69 (49.6%) of them were male athletes. It can be said that the distribution of athletes in the lowest and highest groups is low according to the year-end grade point averages. It can be said that athletes have a medium grade point average. A statistically low positive correlation was found between the end of year grade point averages of the athletes and their sports success. No statistically significant relationship was found between the mean LGS score of the athletes and their BMI, year of sports, number of days of sports, and sport success. It can be concluded that taking part in sports teams and continuing sports activities does not decrease academic achievement but does not cause a significant increase. Teachers should take a more active role in guiding students into sports. Emphasis on health and entertainment can be put forward to encourage more students to engage in sports.
