Emotional abuse and self-percept in sports high school students: A comparative study

The purpose of this study is to compare the emotional abuse and self-perceptions of sports high school students and other high school students. The population of the research consists of students studying in sports high schools and other high schools in Batman province in the 2023-2024 academic year. The sample of the research consists of a total of 500 students who participated in the research voluntarily. "Personal Information Form" was used to collect data on the demographic characteristics of the students. "Self-Perception Scale for Adolescents" and "Emotional Abuse Scale" were used to collect data on students' self-perception and emotional abuse. After the surveys were administered, the SPSS 22.0 software package was used to facilitate statistical analysis. Various statistical techniques such as frequency analysis, percentage analysis, arithmetic mean, independent variable test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc test were used to analyze the data. As a result of the analysis, significant differences were detected in the emotional abuse dimension of students studying in sports high schools depending on variables such as gender, age, class, family income, number of siblings and father's education (p <0.05). This significance means that men's scores are higher than women's for the gender variable, those who are 18 years old for the age variable, those who are in the 12th grade for the class variable, those who have a middle level family income (17-30 thousand TL) for the family income, and 1- for the number of siblings. It was found that the emotional abuse scale scores of fathers who had 3 siblings and whose father was a primary school graduate were higher. When the self-perception scale scores of the students studying at the sports high school were examined, a significant difference was detected only in the number of siblings dimension. This significance was observed to be higher in self-perception scores for those who had 7 siblings or more. Significant differences were detected in the emotional abuse dimension of students studying in other high schools depending on variables such as gender, age, class and father's education level (p<0.05). This significance was found to be higher for men than women for the gender variable, for the age variable, 14-year-olds, for the class variable, for those in the 9th grade, and for the father's education level, the emotional abuse scale scores of fathers who were high school graduates were higher. When the self-perception scale scores of students studying at other high schools were examined, a significant difference was detected in the gender and age variables. This significance revealed that men's scores were higher than women's for the gender variable, and self-perception scores were higher for 18-year-olds for the age variable. When the relationship between students' emotional abuse and self-perception scale was examined, it was determined that there was a negative relationship between emotional abuse and self-perception scores.
