Examining the relationship between athletes' value orientations and moral decision-making attitudes

Ethics and values in sports can be considered as the basic principles inherent in the nature of sports. These principles not only prevent the sport from turning into a competition and the ambition to win, but also contribute to the real identity of the sport. The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between the value orientations of the athletes and their moral decision-making attitudes. The relational survey model was used as a methodological model in the research. While a total of 500 individuals, who are individual and team athletes, constitute the research population, the sample is represented by the sufficient number of 218 people as a result of the calculations made according to the 95% confidence interval and 5% error rate. A total of 240 athletes participated in the research. For the analysis of the data, first of all, normality analysis was performed. The skewness and kurtosis values between -2 and +2 are taken as reference. Independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance anova were used for normally distributed data. In addition, Pearson correlation analysis was applied to evaluate the relationship between the value orientations of the athletes and their moral decision-making attitudes. In addition, path analysis was used to evaluate the effect of value orientations of athletes on moral decision-making attitudes. As a result, the value orientations of the athletes can be interpreted as an important determinant on their moral decision-making attitudes.
