Abstract (EN)

Erzurum is one of the most risky cities in Turkey in terms of earthquake hazards. The city has been subjected to major earthquakes from past to present and has suffered significant damage from these earthquakes. The 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred on June 2, 1859 is recorded in the archives as the most damaging earthquake in Erzurum's history. The lack of acceleration records of the earthquake, which occurred before the instrumental period, made it very difficult to interpret this destructive earthquake. When the damage records in the literature are examined, some historical mosques and many properties in Erzurum were damaged in this earthquake. In this thesis, it is aimed to produce a synthetic earthquake record of the June 2, 1859 Erzurum earthquake using stochastic modeling techniques in order to better understand the seismicity of Erzurum in terms of civil engineering. In order to verify the generated synthetic earthquake record, the testimony of historical mosques that experienced this earthquake firsthand was used. First of all, a total of 9 historical masonry mosques, whose damage records are clearly known in the literature and which are considered to be highly likely to have been damaged in the June 2, 1859 Erzurum earthquake, were selected, and theoretical modal analyses were performed by creating finite element models of these structures. Then, operational modal analysis was performed on the mosques in line with these analyses. Then, the finite element models of the mosques were calibrated using the obtained dynamic behavior parameters. The synthetic acceleration record of the June 2, 1859 earthquake generated by the stochastic finite fault method was applied to the finite element models of the mosques. The performance evaluation results obtained as a result of these dynamic analyses were compared with the damage records reported in the literature. For the synthetic record produced for the June 2, 1859 Erzurum earthquake, PGA 0.19g, PGV 8.8 cm/sec, and PGD 2.5 cm were calculated. It was concluded that the MMI intensity scale value of the earthquake was IX.
