9. SUMMARYTHE EFFECTS OF SEVOFLURANE AND DESFLURANE ON LIVER INSTREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETIC RATSThe purpose of this study was to determine the hepatic effects of sevoflurane anddesflurane in streptozocin induced diabetic rat liver.Following the local research ethics committee approval, 36 rats were divided into 6groups: Group-C, group-S, group-D, group-DC, group-DS, groupDD. DM induced by asingle injection of intraperitoneal streptozotocin at a dose of 55 mg/ kg. Rats were classifiedas diabetic if their blood glucose levels exceed 250 mg/dl. After 4 weeks maintainingminimum alveolar concentration (MAC) 1 for rats, 6% desflurane and 2% sevoflurane wereadministered in 4 L of 100% oxygen for 2 hours. At the end of anesthesia, all rats receivedketamin 100 mg/kg intraperitoneally and euthanasia were applied by exsanguinatingintraabdominal blood. Liver tissue were extracted to determine TBARS, CAT, NOS, GST,PON activities biochemically and average damage scores (ADS) were evaluatedhistopathologically.Average damage scores increased in the liver tissue of desflurane and sevofluranegroups versus control group, but it was not statistically significant. ADS in DM induced ratswas significantly higher when compared to the control group. Administration of desfluraneand sevoflurane in diabetic rats, demonstrated a statistically non-significant increase in ADScompared to control diabetes in the liver. İn the diabetes control group than the control groupTBARS, NOS increased, CAT, GST were similar and PON decreased. Administration ofdesflurane and sevoflurane in rats, TBARS, NOS increased, PON decreased, but notstatistically significant than the control group, CAT and GST activities were similar. Indiabetic rats given desflurane and sevoflurane, TBARS, NOS, CAT and GST increased whilePON decreased.In conclusion, desflurane and sevoflurane caused mild to moderate hepatic damage indiabetic rats, but we found that they are not caused by changes in non-diabetic rats. As hepaticinjury due to these two agents is mild to moderate, we believe that they can be used safely indaily anesthesia practice.Key Words: Desflurane, Sevoflurane, Diabetes Mellitus, Liver
