Abstract (EN)
This thesis consists of two sections. In fthe first one, the conquest of the Balkan region and calligraphy art is explained and in the later section callighraphy art in Shumen is examined. The main objective of the study is to review the callighraphy school in Shumen according to Islamic arts perspective. The school was established in Shumen district of Nigbolu Sanjak of Ottoman State by assignment of a calligrapher in the library of the social complex constructed by Şerif Halil Paşa and later patronaged by the padishah after the visit of Mahmud the Second to the district in 1827. Assignment of the callighrapher of the era, Ibrahim Shawqi, resulted in a more systematical production, widespread distribution of the manuscripts and a more vivid environment for the school. Shumen became a place for quranic scripting place with its illumination and binding style that is unique. The foundations of the calligraphy education in Shumen, the patronage of Mahmud the Second, calligraphers tought there and their productions, and their importance in İslamic Art History were documented referencing to the items and collections available to the author's access.
