Abstract (EN)

This thesis aims to examine the role of industrial designers within the framework of sustainability, addressing environmental, economic, and social dimensions. The historical development of sustainability is discussed in the light of the Brundtland Report, providing a conceptual framework and establishing connections with circular economy, waste management, and production processes. The technological transformation that began with the Industrial Revolution is analyzed through the progression from Society 1.0 to Society 5.0 and from Industry 1.0 to Industry 4.0. The study evaluates sustainable product design through principles of sustainable design, green design, and approaches such as "design for X," emphasizing the significance of industrial design in this context. Additionally, industrial design education in universities in Turkey and Germany is comparatively analyzed from a sustainability perspective, examining how educational approaches shape the professional competencies of designers. In conclusion, the thesis highlights the role of industrial designers in sustainable development, evaluating their importance in achieving sustainability goals through social responsibility, environmental awareness, and economic viability.
