Abstract (EN)
As stated in the 2016 Paris Agreement, concerns about global climate change and carbon emissions have increased, and organizations, in particular have embarked on an annual measurement process to es1timate their contribution to global climate change. Scientists attribute the global warming trend observed since the mid20th century to the human expansion of the "greenhouse effect"1 — warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space. Life on Earth depends on energy coming from the Sun. About half the light energy reaching Earth's atmosphere passes through the air and clouds to the surface, where it is absorbed and radiated in the form of infrared heat. About 90% of this heat is then absorbed by greenhouse gases and re-radiated, slowing heat loss to space. To summarize, Carbon footprint, one of the measurement methods, is a widely applied tool to assess the environmental impact of organizations. This study presents a real case study of a denim washing company that focuses on consumption-based carbon footprint, including different categories under the classification of ISO 14064 International Organization for Standardization. Furthermore, a study on indirect emissions was conducted by considering indirect non energy-related emissions, which are ignored in the literature. According to the ISO 14064-2018 standard, the annual carbon footprint of the jeans washing company was found to be 2491.02 t/CO2e in total for the general carbon footprint of 2021. Direct emission was calculated at 1575.75 tCO2e, indirect energy-related emission at 798.09 tCO2e, and indirect non energy-related emission at 117.18 tCO2e. The highest CO2 emissions are related to the heating from greenhouse gas direct emission sources, and the lowest CO2 emissions are related to fire-CO2 tube storage. This article will be one of the pioneering studies to comprehensively analyze the organizational carbon footprint calculation of a denim washing company, which academics and managers can use as a guide for calculating the carbon footprint at the organizational level, to understand the importance of indirect non energy in the total carbon footprint, and to explain how to evaluate the results obtained as a result of the calculation with sector-specific mitigation strategies.
