An analysis of the syrian migration from the perspective of securitization: the case of Türkiye- Syria border provinces

The Securitization Theory, a product of social constructivism within international relations approaches and brought into focus by the Copenhagen School, serves as the fundamental theoretical framework of this study. The main aim of this research is to examine and analyze how Syrian migration has been securitized in Turkey. Within this scope, the securitizing or desecuritizing speech acts of the government, opposition, and society regarding Syrian migration have been analyzed. Additionally, a survey method was employed to observe the societal reflections of all speech acts related to Syrian refugees. The survey was conducted in six provinces along Turkey's 911 km-long border with Syria, with 1,010 participants. As a result of this multi-method research, it was found that there is a perception of securitization within Turkish society, and that opposition parties play an active role in the securitization of Syrian migration. Meanwhile, the ruling party has been observed to be partially effective in desecuritizing Syrian migration in Turkey.
