Abstract (EN)
This study aims to examine the motivation of Syrian refugee students in grades 5 through 8, who are enrolled in lower secondary education in Turkey, toward the science course and to determine whether this motivation differs based on various socio-demographic variables. The relationship between students' interest in science, their motivation toward the course, academic performance, and levels of motivation was analyzed. Data were collected using the "Motivation Scale for Primary Science and Technology Course." The study population consists of Syrian students attending public schools in the Şehitkamil and Şahinbey districts of Gaziantep, and the sample includes 842 Syrian students enrolled in these schools. The research data were analyzed using quantitative methods. Findings indicate that Syrian refugee students generally demonstrate a positive level of motivation toward science. However, motivation levels vary significantly according to certain socio-demographic factors. Furthermore, students' motivation was found to be associated with their educational background, duration of school attendance, and level of adaptation to the Turkish education system. Given the limited number of studies on the educational status of Syrian refugee students in Turkey, this research offers valuable contributions to the academic literature and the sociological understanding of the country. The findings may also guide the development of policies aimed at enhancing the educational integration of refugee students.
