Geographical distribution and socio-economic effects of Syrian refugees in Malatya

In December 2010, the the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia, or the popular uprisings known as the Arab Spring spread to North Africa and the Middle East. One of the Middle East countries where these uprisings have began is Syria. Small groups, which began in Syria in March 2011, turned into a popular uprising in a short period of time, under the influence of the whole country. As a result of the armed intervention of the Assad regime in demosnstrations and protests, the events have turned into a civil war that has been going on for many years. As a result of the on goning civil war in Syria fort he last 8 years, because of the violent events, millions of Syrians have left their home country and have had to migrate to other regions of the world, especially the neighboring countries. Syrian refugees seek refuge in neighboring countries, one of the which is Turkey. In also every region of Malatya, Turkey also one of the provinces where the placement of Syrian refugees who are living. In this study, the geographical distribution and socio-economic effects of Syrian refugees in Malatya province were investigated. 843 of the locals and 823 of the Syrian refugees were surveyed. The questionnaire and face-to-face interviews were conducted to answer the questions of the local population and the Syrian citizens. In this context, the impact of Syrian refugees on Malatya economy and the perspective of local people towards Syrians have been researched and focused on this issue. The scope of the research is the neighborhoods where refugees live intensively in Yeşilyurt and Battalgazi Municipalities of Malatya. As a result of this study, the effects of Syrian refugees on employment, house rents, worker wahes and the socio-economic and cultural characteristics of the city has been examined.
