An examination of the perception of grade eight Syrian refugee students about same basic concept related to democracy

In this study, our neighbor which is the civil war in Syria and run away from the Syrian sigin students to our country which the grade eighth, the perceptions of some concepts of democracy which they assumed to be learned in Social Studies Course were examined. Qualitative study method and case prepared using scientific pattern a semi-structured interview form was conducted. As a experimental group, the Syrians in Adıyaman, five girls, five male students from Cadırkent School in Temporary Accommodation Center; as a control group Adiyaman Central District, five girls and five boys from five different socio economic schools, a total of twenty students were studied. Data collected from the experimental group and the control group with the Semi-Structured Interview Form, it was analyzed by continuous comparison. First of all in terms of being related to the subject, literature review on the subject of refugee and asylum-seekers; then, to examine the subject of democracy, this work has been done. In the literature review, general situation of refugee or asylum in Turkey and the world and the problems encountered were examined. With the subject of democracy, types of democracy, in the world, preliminary studies on democracy in Turkey and Syria, then the relationship between democracy education and democracy in education programs was examined. Concepts related to democracy are determined and expert opinion is taken, Preparing a Semi-Structured Interview Form, the study was conducted with the selected experimental and control groups. As a result of the study, Syrian students are not as dominant as Turkish students, using a language far from the literature in general terms, they gave emotional answers. In this context, school and after-school activities, Social Studies It is stated that more activities about concept teaching should be included in the lectures and workbooks. The importance of using materials in concept teaching, demonstrations of democracy in the social studies courses of Syrian students, to determine the reasons for not reaching the desired level, it has been proposed toto promote academic studies.
