Evaluation of the clinical success and parental satisfaction of two different prefabricated zirconium crowns applied to the primary molar teeth

The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the clinical success of two different prefabricated zirconium crowns (NuSmile® and EZ-Pedo™/EZCrown™) which are used in the restoration of the decayed primary molars and to investigate the parental satisfaction. Twenty-eight patients between 3-9 years of age were included in the study. Thirty crowns in each group were applied to the first or second molars using split-mouth technique. The clinical success of the crowns was evaluated by anatomical integrity, marginal adaptation, plaque index and gingival index in periodical examinations 1 week, 3, 6 and 12 months after the initial treatment. The parental satisfaction was measured using an questionnaire by taking the size, shape, color, function, durability parameters into account. No statistically significant difference was observed between the anatomical integrity and general success distributions of NuSmile® and EZ-Pedo™/EZCrown™ groups. There were no statistically significant differences between the mean PI and GI values measured in the two prefabricated zirconium crown groups at baseline, 3, 6 and 12-month controls (p> 0.05). PI values of the control group at the baseline, 3-month, 6-month and 12-month were found to be significantly higher than the PI values of the NuSmile® and EZ-Pedo™/EZCrown™ groups (p <0.05). While GI values of the control group at the baseline, 3-month and 6-month were found to be significantly lower than the GI values of the NuSmile® group (p <0.05), there was no significant statistical difference for 12-month GI values between the control group and NuSmile® group (p>0,05). Baseline and 6-month GI values of the control group were significantly lower than the baseline and 6-month GI values of the EZ-Pedo™/EZCrown™ group (p <0.05). No statistically significant difference was observed between the control group and the 3-month and 12-month GI values of the EZ-Pedo™/EZCrown™ group (p> 0.05). No statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups in all parameters in which parental satisfaction was evaluated (p> 0.05). As a result, it is thought that there is no difference between the clinical characteristics and parental satisfaction of two crown brands, both brands have high clinical success and they will take place in the practice of pediatric dentistry over time due to their superior clinical and aesthetic features.
