Syrian women's aspirations for syria on the political level, hopes and expectations

This thesis investigates the political aspirations and expectations of Syrian women amid the ongoing conflict in Syria. The study aims to capture their hopes for the future political landscape of Syria, identify the barriers to their political participation, and assess the impact of the conflict on their lives. Employing a quantitative research approach, the study collected data through a structured survey administered to 524 Syrian women from various regions, including Northeast Syria, Northwest Syria, regime-controlled areas, and the diaspora. The survey was designed using a thematic approach based on existing literature to ensure relevance and comprehensiveness. The findings reveal that Syrian women overwhelmingly desire peace, justice, and democratic governance. The most favored scenario among respondents is achieving comprehensive peace that ensures justice and national reconciliation, leading to a democratic political transition. However, significant barriers to political participation were identified, including cultural and social constraints, security threats, and institutional obstacles. These challenges underscore the need for targeted efforts to empower women politically and socially. The study also highlights the profound impact of the conflict on Syrian women, who have faced widespread displacement and socio-economic hardships. Many have taken on new roles and responsibilities, becoming primary breadwinners for their families, which has fostered a sense of resilience and agency but also exposed them to new risks and vulnerabilities. Additionally, the influence of external actors in exacerbating the conflict was a critical concern among respondents, reflecting the complex geopolitical dimensions of the Syrian conflict. Based on these findings, the thesis proposes several recommendations to enhance the political participation and empowerment of Syrian women. These include promoting gender-responsive governance, enhancing educational opportunities, strengthening economic empowerment, addressing security concerns, fostering inclusive peace processes, and supporting grassroots initiatives. This research contributes to the broader discourse on Syria's future by providing a platform for Syrian women to voice their opinions and aspirations. It underscores the importance of including women's perspectives in political decision-making and peacebuilding processes, offering practical recommendations for creating a more inclusive and equitable political landscape in Syria. The resilience and determination of Syrian women, as highlighted in this study, provide a strong foundation for building a brighter future for Syria.
