Allegory as a device of domination and avoidance of domination

The way people express themselves is inevitably influenced by the environment they live in and societal conditions. Mental frameworks such as beliefs and ideologies not only shape the content of speech but also determine how it is delivered. That's why artists or writers often excel in helping others see the world more clearly, fostering awareness, and focusing attention. They achieve this by revealing patterns and making deep meanings and connections of things visible through various narrative techniques. Thus, the history of literature, bearing witness to the changes in historical circumstances and historical necessities, is also the history of the evolution of narrative techniques across eras. Allegory was the dominant narrative technique of the traditional world before the ascendancy of the modernity paradigm in the 19th century. This thesis, by examining the historical conditions of the invention and development of allegory as a narrative technique analyzed and compared the examples of constructive and deconstructive allegory. In line with this aim, the study investigates why allegory is considered a narrative technique using one of the methods of qualitative research called the grounded theory method. Differences between allegory and other narrative techniques often referred to as allegory in literature are identified, and the historical development process of allegory is examined. Additionally, to highlight the distinctions between structural allegory and deconstructive allegory, the function of allegory is evaluated in William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies and Yaşar Kemal's novel The Sultan of Elephants and Red-Bearded Lame Ant. In conclusion, an original theoretical framework concerning allegory is established. Furthermore, categories related to allegory are generated. Moreover, assessing allegory as a narrative technique and a device will contribute to comprehending its historical evolution within the framework of cause-and-effect relationships
