The language of the symbols in tanzimat novels

The Ottoman geography, along with the newspaper Tercuman-i Âhval, published by Şinasi and Agâh Efendi in 1860, turns its direction from East to West. With the Tanzimat period, new genres begin to enter Turkish literature. At the beginning of this genre comes the novel. Ottoman intellectuals make translations during this period, and these translations quickly begin to spread among the public with the discovery of the printing press. The share of the novel in the enlightenment movement, which spreads wave in the Ottomans, is of great importance. The symbols used in the Tanzimat novels have become the symbol of the period, the temperament of the characters, the social and cultural conditions in which they exist. The symbol concept has been researched from the past to the present and has inspired many works. Even in their daily lives, people often use various symbols as conscious or unconscious. They often express their emotions, thoughts and wishes with symbols. The symbol language is too deep to be understood from the surface. Because symbols are the most effective weapons used by the author against the mind of the reader. At the point where words cannot be saved, they grow to the author's help. The symbols used in the Tanzimat novel and some of the novels of Ara Nesil are important for drawing the profiles of the period and the characters. Symbols in the novel are like locomotives of fiction. In the novels, almost every name, status and description of symbols are symbols. This study consists of two parts. In the first part, the concept of symbol is emphasized. The opinions of different researchers related to the symbol concept are given and these views are exemplified by the information received from the researchers. In the second part of the study, symbol types and symbols of Tanzimat and Ara Nesil novels are given. In this section, the symbol types are tried to be explained methodically and each symbol is taken to a title in its own name and explained. After giving brief information about the types of symbols in the novels, the symbols are exemplified according to the chronological order of the novels.
