Sustainable development of historical fabric: An evaluation through the old yeşi̇lyurt hotel building in Trabzon

City squares, a crucial element in the formation of historical environments, are important public spaces that influence the development of the historical fabric and social identity of a given geography. Squares, with their historical structures, both maintain their existence and ensure the continuity of architectural heritage. Historical buildings may undergo partial or complete functional changes over time due to changing lifestyles and user needs, thus surviving and continuing their existence. Some historical buildings that have survived to the present day have managed to preserve their original functions in their entirety. A good example of this is the Yeşilyurt Hotel, which continues to exist in Trabzon's city square with its original function and is still preferred by users today. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the old Yeşilyurt Hotel and determine the changes/interventions it has undergone from the past to the present while maintaining its existence and function. The first step involves a literature review to establish the theoretical framework; the second step involves field research on the building and its surroundings; and the third step involves compiling and analyzing written and visual sources about the hotel building. Finally, the fourth step presents the findings obtained regarding the building and offers recommendations. The study concluded that while the building has managed to preserve its function and facade characteristics in their entirety, it has largely lost its original historical character due to interventions made to its interior over time.
