Investigation of the frequency, severity and affecting factors of the symptoms experienced by patients hospitalized in the medical oncology clinic

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency, severity, and the factors affecting the symptoms of the cancer patients in the Medical Oncology Clinic Method: This descriptive study was conducted in the Medical Oncology Clinic of Akdeniz University's Hospital from January 2019 to March 2019. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. In the collection of data; Patient Presentation Form, ECOG and MD Anderson Symptom Inventory were used. Mean, percentage, Chi-square, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis and Correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. All data were analyzed using version 22.0 of SPSS package program p <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: 64.84% of the patients were male and the mean age of the patients was 58.22 ± 13.39. The duration of the patients included in the study was 18.86 ± 31.60 months and 89.01% was in the fourth stage of the disease. 35.63% of patients are diagnosed with gastrointestinal system cancer. The patients were admitted to the oncology clinic for 51.14% support. The most frequent symptom experienced by inpatients is lack of appetite and fatigue. When the effects of the symptoms, symptoms and symptoms of the patients on the life of the individual were compared, significant differences were found in the inpatients for supportive care. The symptoms of vomiting in oncology patients differ according to the status of metastasis the mean vomiting score (0.52 ± 1.55) of the patients with metastasis was higher than those without metastasis. Conclusion: In our study, the frequency and severity of the symptoms of the cancer patients in the Medical Oncology Clinic and the factors affecting them; Being in advanced stage cancer, the reason for hospitalization for the support treatment, the duration of hospital stay was affected.
