The problem of the corporeality of resurrection in al-Ghazali's Tahafut al-Falasifa

The aim of this research is to evaluate the problem of the corporeality of resurrection, which Abu Hamid al-Ghazali discussed in the twentieth discussion of his work Tahāfut al-Falāsifah (The Incoherence of the Philosophers). Abu Hamid al-Ghazali is one of the most frequently mentioned philosophers in Islamic thought due to his works, ideas, and debates. In his renowned work, Tahāfut al-Falāsifah, he critiqued philosophers for their views. His criticisms regarding the corporeality of resurrection primarily focus on Ibn Sina. He criticized Ibn Sina's ideas presented in his early works, even accusing him of disbelief due to these views. Given the methodology of the work, the topic is discussed with support from the eighteenth and nineteenth discussions. As necessity dictates, these three discussions will be analyzed within the framework of the debates on the corporeality of resurrection. The research will be prepared using a literature review method, drawing upon al-Ghazali's aforementioned work, Ibn Sina's early works in which he summarized his views on resurrection, and relevant sources. The limitations of the research are shaped by the problem of the corporeality of resurrection in al-Ghazali's work and Ibn Sina's views on the subject. The primary reason for this limitation is that the problem of the corporeality of resurrection is a significant point of contention between the philosophers and al-Ghazali, and a master's thesis is not suitable for evaluating all the discussions in the work. The research's explanation of both opposing views, along with their theses and antitheses, in a comparative manner will contribute to the literature. This study will contribute to reading the debates between al-Ghazali and the philosophers together with the methodologies of both parties.
