Determination of zinc cadmium content and adsorption capacities in soils taken from tekkeköy region

Abstract (EN)
The industrial revolution and the increase in production activities, the rapid increase in the rate of urbanization and the population, the lack of planning in urbanization and the loss of the characteristics of agricultural lands have made soil pollution an important part of environmental problems. Tekkeköy surroundings, where industrial facilities and agricultural lands are located very close to each other, were chosen as the study area. Within the scope of the thesis study, samples were taken from 63 points in order to determine the basic characteristics of the region. According to the results of the analyzes made, some physical and chemical properties of the soil samples were determined and the ranges were observed as follows KDK (me/100g) 5.00-80.43, % Organic Matter 0.21-5.02, pH 4.57-7.97, % Moisture 0.00- 10.03, % CaCO3 0.00-14.27. In the soil samples taken from the region, seven different structures were determined. The zinc and cadmium contents of the soil samples were determined in the range of 37.5 – 195.26 (mg/kg), 0.00-5.10 (mg/kg), respectively. Basic physical and chemical properties of soil samples and zinc and cadmium contents of soils were obtained by using reverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method as well as using ArcGIS 9.2 software. Eight soil samples with different basic physical and chemical properties were selected from the soil samples and the adsorption behavior of the soil samples was evaluated by adsorption isotherms and kinetics models. The results indicated that the heavy metal behavior of the soil samples was consistent with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. Pseudo second order kinetics, which is one of the adsorption kinetics expressing the adsorption rate, was found to be compatible for both zinc and cadmium. The correlation of zinc and cadmium contents of soil samples and zinc and cadmium adsorption capacities of soils with some basic physical and chemical properties were evaluated by Shapiro–Wilk normality test and Spearman rank correlation analysis.
