Sustainability, application examples in technology and design course

The new curriculum of the Technology and Design course taught in the 7th and 8th grades of secondary schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education started to be implemented in the 2017-2018 academic year. In the 2019-2020 academic year, the Teacher's Guidebook of the Technology and Design course was published by the Ministry of National Education. A total of 17 sample applications are included, one for each department. Students who take the Technology and Design course are expected to have 21st century skills. In this direction, it is important that sustainability, which is on the agenda of today and the future, is integrated into the teaching of Technology and Design course in our education system, practice examples and included in the achievements of the course. In this context, the Technology and Design course taught in the 7th and 8th grades of secondary school, "When the Curriculum is examined, it is seen that many innovations that make our lives easier play an active role in the emergence of technologies developed through scientific researches as a result of design. In addition, it is stated that the Technology and Design course aims to explain the relationships between scientific research, technology and design and to raise awareness on this issue" (MEB, 2016). In line with these objectives, in the research, "Learning Areas", "Achievements", "Departments" and "Example Practices" were handled separately in order to analyze the sample applications in the Technology and Design course Teacher's Guide book taught in secondary schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in terms of sustainability understanding. It was taken and analyzed in the context of sustainability.As a result of the research, it was concluded that sustainability was largely included in the Technology and Design course Teachers' Guide Book. In addition, it was determined that there were great similarities between the principles of sustainability and the target achievements of the course. It has been concluded that the products are generally suitable for the sustainability gains.The three components of sustainability, which are the developments in the fields of Society, Environment and Economics, and the new curriculum of the Technology and Design course and the "Learning Areas", "Air Outcomes", "Chapters" in the Guidebook for Teachers Considering the innovations in the Research and Exemplary Practices together, it is expected that this research will make a positive contribution to the awareness of sustainability.
