The role of the concept of gatekeeping in news selection in television journalism; Review through mainstream media channels

In Television News, the person/persons who approve the news, publish it, deal with its adventure until it reaches the approval process for publication, and report the news act as Threshold Watchmen. Sometimes the person who approves the publication of the news may be the Editor, and sometimes this person may be the Editor. Being a gatekeeper is not a direct task, and it is never clear who the gatekeeper will be. The term threshold gatekeeper means the person who is consulted to ensure that the news is approved, that is, to jump over the threshold (the threshold here is the person whose news is approved). The news can only be published after this person approves the news. Exactly at this point, the research subject of the thesis is "The Role of the Concept of Gatekeeping in News Selection in Television Journalism; As a result of the "Examination on Mainstream Television Channels", we will see the importance of gatekeepers in the news, the factors affecting the news selection, their individual/institutional effects on the news decision, the effect of the education they received and the effect in terms of gender. How Threshold Gatekeeping is carried out in Mainstream Media Channels and its impact on the approval of news has been revealed as a result of interviews with the determined channels. The content of the research includes the concept of news, television journalism, television periods, private channels, mainstream media, gatekeeping and interviews, as well as the results. According to the results of the interviews, people doing the same job on different channels, news is published on the basis of corporate interests and missions, there are institutional differences in the selection of news, generally everyone in Mainstream Media Channels can be in a position to act as a Threshold Watchman, and apart from that, the people closest to the Threshold Watchman are News Managers and Editors. It has been determined that all the criteria taken as basis when publishing these news are almost the same for everyone, and that the concept of Threshold Watchman can be applied by everyone in the news department in line with sudden interventions during the news publishing process. In this thesis, which examines the Concept of Threshold Watchman in Television Journalism and investigates Threshold Watchmanship through the Main Stream Media Channels, which is the research universe, it is stated that the person who is the Threshold Keeper has a great influence on the news, manages the publication process of the news with his decisions and equipment, does not proceed with his own foresight and according to corporate interests and news ethics. It was concluded that it moved. In addition to state channels, it is also divided into two in Main Stream Media Channels; It has been determined that there are restrictions on free expression of ideas, partisan media situation, and news production aimed at creating or changing the agenda.
