Reasons for negative perception on the students of the basic science lessons: Perspectives and solution proposals of the secondary school students to the basic science lessons

Abstract (EN)

In this study, it was aimed to determine the thoughts about the preference of the basic science lessons on the career choices at the beginning of the university and to investigate of motivation, attitude and interest of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students of secondary school with different variations (gender, grade level, occupational preference, academic achievement, choice of science related profession etc.). The universe of the research consists of 11,469 secondary school students and the sample of the research consists of 900 students, which was determined by systematic sampling method in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade 9 different secondary schools in Aksaray province center in the 2012-2013 academic year. The general scanning model was used in this study. It was handled personal information as an independent variable and motivation, attitude and interest scores as a dependent variable. In order to gather data in the research, a personal information form and aimed to measure the student motivation, attitude and interest of the survey was used, which was named as "Determination of Reasons for Unselection of Departments Regarding the Basic Sciences of Universities". It was detected that students' motivation, attitude and interest scores did not show normal distribution (p <.001). For this reason non-parametric tests were used in this study. When the science motivation of the students were examined by attitude and interest of the students according to the sex variable, it was seen that there was a meaningful difference in favor of female students. It was seen that the 6th grade students had the highest science motivation, attitude and interest from the students, followed by the 8th and 7th grade students in respectively. It has been detected that students have a medium level, positive and meaningful relationship between science motivation and science attitude. Taking into consideration the average of the groups, it was found that the students who got the score of 85-100 for the highest motivation of science were found to have 45-54, 70-84, 55-69, 0-44 points and the students who got the score of 85-100 for the highest attitude of science were found to have 45-54, 70-84, 55-69, 0-44 points and the students who got the score of 85-100 for the highest interest of science were found to have 45-54, 70-84, 55-69, 0- 44 points. It has been detected that there is a low level, inverse and meaningful relationship between motivation, attitude and interest levels of the students and choice of profession.
