Abstract (EN)
Purpose: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory properties of Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS, Ankaferd Health Products Ltd, Turkey) histopathologically on temporomandibular joint disorders treatment in experimental temporomandibualr joint (TMJ) arthritis of growing rats. Methods: In this pilot study 25 Sraque Dawley growing rats (12 week old) were used and divided into 5 groups randomly. To be able to study chronic inflammation, joint inflammation was induced by injecting complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into the TMJ's of Sprague-Dawley rats according to the double intraarticular injection protokol formulated in the studies with injection of 50μl CFA in first and 15th day. To study antiinflammation property of ABS each of groups received 1)CFA, 2) 0.05 ml of ABS and CFA, 3) 0,075 ml of ABS and CFA 4) 0.1 ml of ABS and CFA simultaneously. All rats were euthanized 30 days later. Sagital sections of TMJs were dissected and evaluated histopathologically. Results: According to the study of groups, Synovitis has recovered according to the IL-1, IL-6 TNF-α and PGE study with 0.075ml of ABS and was statistically meaningfull. Capsulities has recovered according to the IL-6 and PGE evaluation with 0.05ml of ABS and was statistically meaningfull Retrodiscitis has recovered according to the IL-1, IL-6 TNF-α and PGE study with 0.05 ml of ABS and was statistically meaningfull. Osteoartritis has recovered according to the IL-1, IL-6 with 0.05 ml of ABS, TNF-α and PGE study with 0.075ml of ABS and was statistically meaningfull. Conclusion: ABS is known to be a hemostatic agent besides this, intra-articular ABS injection showed antiinflammatory effect in this TMJ model which were statitistically meaningfull. We can conclude that ABS can be regarded as a new antiinflamatory intraarticular agent but further study is needed
