Abstract (EN)
Purpose: The aim of this study was to clinically to determine prevelance of bruxism signs and dentist's awareness after the first examination and referral of the patients with the thought of temporomandibular disorders by the Oral Diagnosis and Radiology Department. Material and Method: 201 patients were included in our study who were referred to the Prosthodontics department for treatment with temporomandibular disorder diagnosis after general examination of oral diagnosis and radiology department. Before the secondary clinical examination by the researcher, bruxism questionnaire was requested to be filled besides the anamnesis form. Dental atrision was noted as AT1, AT2 and AT3. Lateral sides of the tongue was examined, tongue indendations were recorded and cheek was examined, cheeck indendations were recorded. First and second examination results were compared. Result: There were significant difference between the 1. and the 2. examination results. AT3 type attrion was detected the most by the first examiner and this type was followed by AT2 and AT1. Patients reported parafunctions differed between 2 examiners significantly. Dental attrition was increased with age. Parafunction reports, tongue and cheek indendations were not siginificantly different with age. Tongue indendations were significantly higher in patients who have nocturnal clenching and/or grinding than the patients who have not. There was no siginificant difference between patients who have diurnal bruxism and the patients who have not. Conclusion: In our study it was determined that the dentists diagnosed only severely atrized teeth. Therefore increase in awareness of dentists is important for early diagnosis and management of bruxism. Awareness of patients about clenching and grinding habits increase with detailed questioning. Therefore with detailed questionnaires patient awareness may increase and diagnosis of bruxism can be easier.
