Elections in Turkey (1946-1965) in the perspective of the principles of fair representation and stability of the government

Political parties and elections are essential elements of democracy. Election systems play a significant role in determining representatives. The elected people make decisions about almost every issue that concerns the country and society—thereby determining the future of the country. Governments' stability is vital for a prosperous country economy and social peace. The election system is critical in ensuring this. The successful effects of the electoral system can manifest itself in every part of the society, as well as its negative characteristics. There is no electoral system that can solve all problems. Election systems and election debates are still up to date for these reasons. Issues related to the election and the electoral system in Turkey has been in constant change. Election laws have been completely renewed several times, and changes made on the election system with the amendment of the law hundreds of times. In my research; innovations brought to the electoral system and the electoral system in Turkey between the years 1946-1965 were discussed. Elections and electoral systems are one of the most debated issues today as in the past. Electoral systems dealt primarily with theoretical aspects, how to apply it in practice, what the political effects of which Turkey has explained in the perspective of "principle of fair representation and stability of the government". Political debates are about the effort to establish a system that combines the principles of fair representation and stability of the government in general. However, in election systems, one policy comes to the fore, while the other is always in the background. The effects and political consequences of the change in the electoral system in the context of justice in representation and stability in administration have been examined. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the electoral system on political life. To discuss the effects of the election system on the election results in the context of representational justice and stability in administration and to examine the relationship with other factors affecting election results. For this purpose, first election systems and elements will be explained and then the elections of 1946-1965 period will be discussed. Keywords: Electoral systems, elections in Turkey (1946-1965)
