Investigation of the adjustments in Terminologia anatomica, in terms related to the nervous system and sense organs

The effective and correct use of terminology in medical sciences and anatomy is very important for a healthy communication between scientists. Since the number of scientific studies on both medical and anatomical terminology is low in our country, this study was conducted to help incase in knowledge in this field. Terminologia Anatomica, published by Thieme in 1998, was used in our study. A total of 2431 terms related to the nervous system and sense organs were examined, and a total of 626 different adjectives included in these terms were evaluated in terms of origin, degree and shape and classified into classes. There are 492 different adjectives in 1924 terms under the title of nervous system. Along with the repetitions of these adjectives, a total of 2279 adjectives took place in the nervous system. Among the nervous system terms, there are 386 terms of Latin origin, 60 of Greek origin, and 46 terms of both Latin and Greek origin adjectives. In addition, there are 177 three-shaped, 304 two-shaped and 11 single-shaped adjectives and 483 positive degree, 6 comparative degree, 3 superlative degree adjectives. There are 133 different adjectives among 507 terms under the heading of sense organs. Along with the repetitions of these adjectives, a total of 474 adjectives were included in the sense organs terms. In terms of sense organs, there are 107 terms of Latin origin, 17 of Greek origin, and 9 of both Latin and Greek terms. Among these adjectives, there are 53 three-shaped, 78 two-shaped and 2 single-shaped adjectives and also 126 positive degree, 6 comparative degree, 1 superlative degree. The total number of adjectives in two different sections was found to be 626. There are a total of 2753 adjectives with the number of repetitions in both sections that we have examined. The data we obtained as a result of this study revealed the distribution and characteristics of adjectives in terms of origin, degree and shape in terminology. In our study, it is aimed to contribute to the development of anatomical and medical terminology, and also to help the anatomy study to be more understandable and memorable for students.
