Abstract (EN)

DAESH continues to maintain its presence in different parts of the world, especially in the Middle East, South Asia and Africa. What enables DAESH to still continue its existence in many parts of the world? What is the role of ideology here? Does DAESH consider its ideology as sacred and sacrosanct or employ it rationally? In this thesis, I attempt to answer the question "how do terrorist organizations ideologically change and adapt" through case-study of DAESH. Although it is studied vastly in the literature, few have analyzed DAESH ideology towards various regions. Therefore, I examine "how ideology helps DAESH to adapt and change itself in different regions" using rational actor perspective. I also try to answer the question "does DAESH-Core's ideological discourse differ from DAESH-Afghanistan's, if yes, how". Furthermore, I venture to uncover the question "how this differentiation influences DAESH's strategies and tactics in two regions." To answer these questions, I analyze fifty-seven issues of online propaganda magazines (Dabiq, Rumiyah and Voice of Khurasan) published by DAESH affiliated media centers. I use discourse and content analysis to examine magazines. I employ a lexicon, created through utilizing sources that form the basis of DAESH ideology to conduct text analysis. To conclude, I argue that DAESH applies different strategies and tactics toward Syria-Iraq and Afghanistan, uses different ideological cues via its online propaganda magazines and it may be considered as a "rational actor".
