Özet (EN)

This research aims to determine the Abu Qurrah's perspective in iconoclasm debates within the framework of his work Maymar fi Ikram al-Aykunat and to present his contribution to icon theology. In the historical process, depending on the attitude of the rulers, worship of the icons was sometimes banned and sometimes released. Many different views have been put forward regarding the origin of iconoclast thought that emerged during the prohibition. The ban on painting continues to be a current topic of debate in Christianity while an iconoclast approach still exists in the Church today. On the other hand, icons are an integral part of Orthodox Christians' daily life and worship practices. Theodore Abu Qurrah, the first theologian who wrote in Arabic, defended the icons explicitly during the iconoclast era and contributed to the discussions with his work known as Maymar fi Ikram al-Aykunat. Thispolemical work was written in order to counter argue the iconoclast theses. Abu Kurra has rested his arguments on Christian tradition especially the Bible and to a lesser extent on the rational argumentation. In this discussion, the author attempted to demonstrate that the Scripture promotes respect for the icons. Besides Bible quotations, Abu Qurrah conveyed his ideas in a traditional way; asking hypothetical questions about icons and provides answers to contribute to the ongoing discussion. Keywords: Theodore Abu Qurrah, icon, iconoclasm, Christianity, Maymar, Harran.
